Brickyard: Where to Eat When You See Book of Mormon

Saturday, September 24th, 2011

A Broadway musical from the creaters of South Park? You heard right. Book of Mormon is the newest hot ticket on Broadway. Described by a New York Times theater review as “a newborn, old-fashioned, pleasure-giving musical,” and just featured on “60 Minutes”, this show is an absolute must-see. If you’re curious about how a show could be simultaneously described as “blasphemous and foul-mouthed” and with a “heart as pure as a Rodgers and Hammerstein show” (we were!?), and you can snag a ticket, you’re in for a fun ride.

The next thing to figure out? Where to eat before or after the show. Most people will hit Broadway — lines, chain restaurants, high prices. But, clearly, you are doing your research, so you know better. Come check us out at Brickyard, just 5 minutes from the Eugene O’Neill theater where you’ll see the show. Our well-crafted dinner menu features delights like Panko Breaded Oysters or Seared Wild Striped Bass, and of course, we have an extensive craft beer list, or try a beer combination from our martini menu for something different. (Ommegang Witte with blackcurrant liquor? amazing.) Everything is reasonably priced, and the atmosphere is laid back but polished.

So, if you’re lucky enough to score a ticket to the show, come see us before or after. You’ll impress your date or your friends, and won’t waste time or money with the rest of the tourist crowds on Broadway!

Eat at Brickyard after The Mountaintop on Broadway

Friday, September 9th, 2011

Broadway is abuzz about the limited run of The Mountaintop, starring Samuel L. Jackson. Haven’t heard of it yet? You will, and tickets are selling fast. This very special play features Jackson and the famed Angela Bassett, and is a “gripping re-imagining” of the events the night before the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. The show has played in London for two years; The Independent called it, “breathtaking, hilarious and heart-stopping.”

That night, April 3, 1968, after delivering one of his most memorable speeches, a very tired MLK went back to his hotel room at the famed Lorraine Hotel during a raging thunderstorm. A stranger (played by Bassett) arrived at his room with surprising news that forced King to face both his destiny and his legacy. Never heard this story? Neither had we.

Running for just eight weeks, this is truly a can’t-miss event. So, book your tickets now.

Wondering where to eat before or after the show? Don’t fight the crowds on Broadway, and definitely don’t pay exorbitant prices for chain restaurant food.

Walk less than 10 minutes to 52nd and 9th, and come see us at Brickyard. We’ve got meals for every palate – and a kids’ meal if you’re bringing the littler ones for a history lesson. Want light fare? Enjoy some honey BBQ glazed wings or a Parisian chicken sandwich from our bar menu. Or, if upscale is more your taste, try a Roasted Beet Salad and Seared Wild Striped Bass from the dinner menu. Either way, enjoy with a cocktail, wine or a beer from our extensive craft beer list.

The NFL at Brickyard: Great Food, Craft Beer & a Terrific Environment

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011

With a bewildering lockout and a pointless preseason out of the way, the NFL begins its regular season this week. For many people in New York City, the only way to spend a Sunday in the fall is ensconced in a seat at their favorite bar, gobbling up chicken wings and other bar food, downing great beer, and watching one great game after another, all day long.

New York certainly does not suffer from a shortage of sports bars from which to choose. Unfortunately, the majority of them define “sports bar” as ones that offer cheap plastic pitchers of bad beer, 25 cent wings and fist fights over space among the crowds packed 5 deep at the bar.

You’ve evolved from those frat party days, and are looking for something a little more sophisticated.

Spend your Sundays at Brickyard Gastropub, the midtown New York sports bar for grown-ups. Here’s why:

We Take Sports Seriously

We have a full season DIRECT TV Sunday Ticket package for NFL Football, so we can show any game, all season long.  And we have  9 HDTVs, more than enough to satisfy everyone in the bar.

The Beer

Our first-class list of 24 craft beers on draft and five craft bottle beers evolves regularly, particularly as the seasons change; it’s always anchored by beers from Blue Point, Six Point, and Ommegang. As the glowing reviews on Open Table and Yelp convincingly show, sports fans share our taste in beer. They also love our beer specials. For nearly every game, we offer some sort of special on one or more of our craft beers. Whether it be a pint for $5 or a 48 ounce Steiner for a tempting price, or a great deal on a combination with our out-of-this world chicken wings that have more meat on each one than on a dozen of the other guy’s, you can always divine our special at a glance, as everyone seated at the bar is partaking of it..

The Wings and Other Fabulous Bar Food

Our passion for sports and beer doesn’t come at the expense of the taste of our food – we are, first and foremost, a Gastropub.

Ours are anything but ordinary: very meaty, perfectly crispy with just enough spice and served with creamy New York State Bleu Cheese dressing. Take your pick of Buffalo, Teriyaki, Thai Chili or Honey BBQ wings.

We also offer baskets of regular and Sweet Potato Fries, Beer Battered Onion Rings and Homemade Potato Chips, as well as the best sliders in NYC, featuring your choice of Kobe Beef, Lamb or Crabcake, and NYC’s best burgers, whether Beef, Veggie, Lamb or Bison.

Groups

Got a big group of friends?  We accept advance reservations from groups of loyal fans and promise to show their team’s game in its entirety. So whether you’re cheeseheads from Green Bay praying for a repeat, Bolt lovers from San Diego or Niners fans from SF dreaming of former glory, all that matters to us is that you’re in NYC now, and fans of the Brickyard. Let us make you feel right at home. Call us today at 212-767-0077.

You can also make smaller reservations on Open Table.

Neighborhood Tour: Alvin Ailey

Sunday, September 4th, 2011

New York City is a cultural center of America, and the world – and the birthplace of so many important American artists and art forms. Alvin Ailey was one of New York’s cultural revolutionaries; when he and his group of African-American modern dancers performed at the 92nd Street in March 1958, a new form of American dance was born.

Fast forward to today: over 23 million people have seen the Alvin Ailey Dance Company perform, and Ailey has forever changed modern dance in America. In 2008, the US Congress even named the Company as an “American cultural ambassador to the world”. The company now performs both new productions and important works of the past, and is constantly re-inventing modern dance.

With both public classes and professional performances, the Alvin Ailey theater is a true NYC landmark. The Ailey Dance Company performs both at its midtown Ailey Citigroup Theater and across the world.

Lucky enough to see the Ailey Dance Company in midtown, but not sure where to eat before the show? Good news – Brickyard Gastropub is just two blocks away. Come see us for a couple of craft beers from our extensive beer list and some Portherhouse lambchops or exotic Soba noodles before the performance. Bringing the kids? Don’t worry, we’ve got them covered with the kids menu.

If you haven’t seen it yet, this is a must-see NYC performance. Make it an easy evening with a leisurely and delicious meal at Brickyard, followed by the beauty of the Alvin Ailey Dance Company. This kind of a night is what NYC is all about.

Neighborhood Tour: Mamma Mia! at The Winter Garden Theater

Sunday, September 4th, 2011

Not a lot of shows on Broadway run for ten straight years. The competition is just too stiff! So, when New Yorkers hear of a show that’s this long-running, we know it’s good. Case in point: Mamma Mia! . Debuting in the US in 2000 and in its current home at the Winter Garden Theater in 2001, this fun, spirited musical brings together a group of hit pop songs by cult favorite 1970s band ABBA. (Remember “Dancing Queen”?) Meanwhile, the show follows the story of a mother-daughter planning the daughter’s wedding on a beautiful Greek Isle, while the mother is haunted by the daughter’s three possible fathers.

The music, plot, and spirited cast add up to an instant hit – which has now been seen by over 42 million people! If you’ve never seen the Broadway show, this one has to be on your NYC bucket list. But don’t take it from us – 96% of Ticketmaster reviewers would recommend it to a friend.

While the show has run worldwide, like with so many things, Broadway is THE place to see it. It shows at the famous Winter Garden Theater, which this year is celebrating its 100th year as a theater! Winter Garden has been home to many popular productions, particularly revues and musicals, such as the Ziegfield Follies, Peter Pan, Wonderful Town, Mame, West Side Story, 42nd Street and Cats, which ran for 19 years, prior to Mamma Mia. Show biz legends who have graced The Winter Garden stage include Al Jolson, Mae West (Jolson and West appeared together in 1911!), Fred Astaire, Fanny Brice, Angela Lansbury, Buddy Ebsen, Bob Hope, Eve Arden, Josephine Baker, Richard Harris, James Earl Jones and Gilda Radner

Where to have dinner before the 8 PM show? (Or after, for you night owls!) Brickyard, of course. Get your Mamma Mia tickets here and come on over – we’re just a few blocks from the theater, so it will be a no-stress night. Whether you’re making it a date night or a family night out, our laidback environment with excellent food and craft beer will make Brickyard a perfect stop. Beer battered fish and chips from our bar menu will keep you full throughout the show, or go with Seared White Striped Bass or a Mandarin Spinach Salad for a traditional light dinner. Wash it all down with a Delirium Noel or one of our many other craft beers, and if you’re with the kids – no worries! Everyone is welcome at Brickyard, and you can feed them all without spending an arm and a leg, as our Kids Menu runs about $8 per little head.

So, make it an affordable and sure-to-please New York night – check out Brickyard and Mamma Mia – a perfect pair!

Brickyard is your NCAA Football Headquarters

Friday, September 2nd, 2011

We love autumn for many reasons. One of the big ones? The NCAA college football season kicks off.

What you surely don’t love is trudging from sports bar to sports bar, only to find our favorite team on a TV buried in the corner. Even worse? When a large group walks in and asks the bartender to change the channel. That doesn’t happen at the Brickyard.

Here’s why:

The Games

We have a full season DIRECT TV package for NCAA Football, so we can show any game, all season long. If you call us at 212-767-0077  to reserve a table in advance, we’ll make sure your seat has a great view of your game.

The Beer

During Featured Games, we’re offering $5 pints of craft beer to anyone wearing team attire. Here’s our craft Beer List, featuring craft from Ommegang of Cooperstown, Sixpoint from Brooklyn, Blue Point from Long Island and so many other local breweries.
